Douglas Olenik

Tubist

Composer/Arranger

Teacher

Douglas Olenik has strived to be as versatile of a musician as he can be.  Currently, he is Principal Tubist for the newly formed Urbana Pops Orchestra from Urbana, Illinois.  Some of the more unique settings he enjoys performing in includes iDEA mACHINE, a drum set and tuba duet with drummer Dean Anshutz of the rock band Red Wanting Blue, and a Bloomington-based New Orleans style dixie band called, Mr. Taylor’s Dirty Dixie 6.

In 2008, Douglas completed a Bachelor’s in Music Education at Youngstown State University studying with Dr. Brian Kiser and Mr. John Turk.  He also completed his Master’s in Music Performance and Literature at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a student of Mr. Mark Moore, and served as his teaching assistant for two years.

On top of substituting for orchestras like the Illinois Symphony, Youngstown Symphony, and the Champaign-Urbana Symphony; Douglas has also found his way into the brass quintet scene by performing for the University of Illinois Graduate Brass Quintet, and substituting for other quintets like the Westminster College (PA) Faculty Brass Quintet, Olympic Brass Quintet, and the Youngstown Fine Arts Brass Quintet.  While in Youngstown, he helped found the Trinity Brass Quintet, a quintet that still serves the Youngstown area by performing church services, weddings, ceremonies and Youngstown State University functions year round.

One of his more unique opportunities was performing with 2007 Grammy Award winning artist for Best Children's Album, Dan Zanes and Friends.  Top that off with every tubist's requirement, polkas during the Oktoberfest season, it is easy to see that Douglas enjoys a performing career filled with variety.

Douglas also teaches private lessons in the Bloomington, Indiana area, and runs a small online business, Olenik Music.  There he sells his and other musician's compositions and arrangements and offers handmade oboe reeds for his woodwind playing friends (made by oboist, Claire Salz).  He is currently a doctoral candidate at Indiana University, studying with Mr. Daniel Perantoni.
